Structural supports beneath Duffill Bridge

About the scheme

Duffill Bridge was originally constructed in 1967 and carries Westerings road to a cul-de-sac, over a tributary of Sandon Brook.

The deck of the structure comprises of 20 reinforced concrete beams with concrete infill, supported by concrete abutment walls.

Elements of the structure are in a weak condition and require strengthening.  In 2016 the bridge was propped and a width restriction on the structure to limit further damage.

Regular monitoring has taken place to ensure that the bridge remains safe for its intended use.

Works are planned during March 2024 to carry out necessary repairs and strengthening works to the structure.

With the support of a specialist concrete repair company, the weakened beam will be strengthened so that it provides the same service life as the rest of the structure. Existing propping underneath the structure will remain in place to provide additional support.

How the work will affect you

Repairs and strengthening works to Duffill Bridge will begin on Monday 4 March 2024 with work taking place Monday to Friday during normal daytime hours, for approximately four weeks. During this time, staff will be mostly working underneath the structure.

The work will be carried out in phases, during which time there will be periods when noise levels will be increased while concrete breakout and removal activities take place.  We endeavour to keep noise levels at their lowest prior to 9am each day, to limit inconvenience.

Due to our working methods, existing traffic management will remain in place during the repairs and will be removed following completion.
