It is anticipated that the route between the A12 and the A131 / A120 will see a significant increase in traffic over the next 20 years because of the planned growth in north east Chelmsford.
Essex County Council is therefore proposing a bypass between Boreham Interchange on the A12 and Deres Bridge junction on the A131. The bypass would close the gap in the strategic network which could help to alleviate congestion and shorten journey times over a wider area.
In March 2007 Essex County Council selected a preferred route for the Chelmsford North East bypass.
Considerable public engagement has taken place in order to determine the most suitable route and to ensure that the Bypass meets the needs of local communities. The final public consultation took place in 2008 focusing on the junctions. No decision has been taken about junction layouts. Funding is unlikely to be available for delivery of the bypass before 2021 therefore an interim option for Boreham Junction is being progressed to support the delivery of housing in north east Chelmsford.
In order to provide more detailed information about the proposed route, and associated issues, the exhibition boards from the 2008 public consultation are available online. Please note that the consultation has now closed.
