A12 Junction 28 Improvement Scheme

In February 2009 Essex County Council was awarded Community Infrastructure Funding to deliver a new A12 junction in North Colchester.

The scheme involved the construction of a new junction on the A12 to enable the development of the former Severalls Hospital site and employment land near the Weston Homes Community Stadium. It also improved access to existing housing and businesses in North Colchester and helped reduce congestion on the local road network. Further to this, the scheme will enable the future delivery of a Park and Ride site north of the A12 at Cuckoo Farm.

The scheme cost approximately £12 million, with the majority of the funding provided by the Homes and Communities Agency as part of the Community Infrastructure Fund.

The delivery of the A12 junction was a joint effort between several partners, including Essex County Council, Colchester Borough Council, the East of England Development Agency, the Haven Gateway Partnership, the Homes and Communities Agency and the Highways Agency.

Construction commenced in December 2009, with the junction opened to the public three months early, in December 2010.

The final phase of the Northern Approach Road, which will connect the junction to Colchester Town Centre across the former Severalls Hospital site, is expected to open to the public in 2012.
