Proposed Cycling Improvements for Wenden Road, Saffron Walden

The nearest train station to Saffron Walden is Audley End, in the village of Wendens Ambo, about 2.5 miles away from the town centre. In order to encourage more cyclists along the route, particularly rail users, several options have been investigated over recent years to improve facilities for cyclists along the Wenden Road.

Following consultation with local stakeholders, the Local Highways Panel has provided funding for design work to improve the route for cyclists. To accomplish this, it is proposed that the north-east section of Wenden Road is made one way towards Saffron Walden, from north of the access road to Abbey Farm, to the junction with Audley End Road. Traffic wishing to use Wenden Road towards the B1383, Wendens Ambo and Audley End station, will instead use Newport Road. Part of the one way section of road will be re-allocated to cyclists. On the southern part of the road, (which will remain two way to provide access to the properties along it), the road will be narrowed in several places to slow down traffic (traffic islands will be installed). Vehicles travelling southbound will be expected to give way to oncoming traffic.

Officers from Essex County Council presented the proposals at Saffron Walden Town Hall on Wednesday 26 February 2014, from 2pm to 8pm to obtain views and feedback. If you were unable to attend, you can view the plans and scheme overview below.

Update - August 2015:

The scheme was approved through ECC internal governance processes in March 2015.

Construction work began on 10 August, with the majority of the work expected to be completed by the end of the school holidays.  Plans have been made to undertake some additional works to link the cycleway to the footpath outside the school which will take place in the October half term holiday.
